Know About Your Contractor
Things to know if you're building a new home or remodeling your existing home
- HIRE a FLORIDA OR COUNTY LICENSED CONTRACTOR.
- All work to be done should have a written agreement (contract) signed by both the LICENSED CONTRACTOR and OWNER.
- The CONTRACTOR must obtain a county or city building permit if the work to be done is structural or over $2,500.00. He is RESPONSIBLE for LABOR AND MATERIALS DONE UNDER THE PERMIT.
- The Contractor can have NO MORE than 10% of the total price down before the permit obtained.
- The contractor you choose should have a good track record and good credit (you might even ask for a credit report on both the contractor and his company-after all you’re going to spend a lot of money with him).
- Any changes to the original agreement must be signed by both contractor and the owner.
To verify a license is in good standing go to Pinellas Contractor Licensing Board (PCCLB) or The Florida Contractor Licensing Board(CILB) web site.
